If you are a web mogul, then you don’t need to read this article.
This one is for people that need help finding the right domain name when designing their new website.
Now, first off. Let’s throw out the idea of branding your site for a moment. I know there are a ton of people out there with wonderfully cute domains like hellopooty dot whatever.
Yes, if you have a really great budget, a good advertising firm, and a pocketful of luck, you too might just be sitting on a goldmine. But just in case you’re not, let’s look at finding a domain name for your new website that is going to be beneficial for you in the long run.
Keywords. Use keywords.
What are keywords? Keywords are the words or phrases that people search for in order to find the product or service they are looking for. Everyone on the planet has gone to Google and searched for something. That term you used to find what you are looking for is a keyword. Or a key phrase, if you did a search containing more than one word.
Despite the hype, there are a ton of good keyword and key phrase domains still available to the world. Odds are, if you search long enough and hard enough, you can still find a good domain that is going to be beneficial to your project.
By beneficial, I mean by helping your new website rank well in the search engines once it’s been built. One of the factors involved when the search engines rank web pages for relevance is the domain name. Now, it’s not the only factor, but it is one part of the recipe. An important part.
So use tools that help you find keywords and phrases that are related to your product or service.
How do you find good keywords and key phrases for your website development?
One great tool is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool
There, you can search for terms and phrases and see what the actual search volume is at Google.
Pretty cool huh?
You can even look for similar terms and broaden your search. It will even give similar suggestions for terms with a smaller amount of searches.
I use this tool almost daily.
Give a lot of thought to your domain before jumping right on one. It’s an important part of your overall development, and a factor that you simply should not overlook.
