Web Design Programming

Website and Software Development

What do you need? Do you know?

I had a client come to me the other day from another firm that had not finished their website design. It happens from time to time.

At either rate, this client had forwarded all of the emails from the previous firm to me. Now, mind you, the site we are talking about was a simple, four page HTML design. It did have a little (unnecessary I might add) flash but other than that, it was just a basic HTML design.

Over and over again in these emails, the previous firm referred to the project and it’s ‘programming’. That they were currently in the ‘programming’ phase. That there was a design phase, a programming phase, and a few other phases I won’t go into here. Suffice it to say, I found the liberal use of the word a bit ridiculous.

Now, before you send me a million hate emails, YES, coding in HTML is technically programming.

But the communications I saw were a bit more deceptive if you ask me. It was as if they were intent on making this client think that they were working in unknown territory. That they were in some laboratory somewhere, working in uncharted waters and programming something that had never been done before.

It’s good old HTML. Not some new platform they are developing for NASA.

Yes, there’s plenty of programming done when it comes to building software for websites. We do it every day in fact. But let’s be honest with the clients boys and girls. Let’s use the term ‘coding’ for the more simple tasks and save the term programming for the more complex tasks we are often asked to do.
